ABSTRACT

BackgroundThe improvement of social function in patients with schizophrenia is an important part of their rehabilitation, and peer support services, as a rehabilitation method, may be of great significance to improve the social function of patients with schizophrenia. ObjectiveTo explore the influence of peer support service on the daily living ability and social function of patients with chronic schizophrenia, and to provide references for promoting the rehabilitation of patients with chronic schizophrenia. MethodsA total of 100 patients with chronic schizophrenia who were hospitalized in The Third People's Hospital of Tianshui from January 1 to December 31, 2020 and met the diagnostic criteria of the International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition (ICD-10) were selected as the study objects, and they were divided into the control group and the study group with 50 cases each by random number table method. Patients in both groups received routine treatment and nursing care, on this basis, the study group received peer support service once or twice a week for 12 weeks, and the control group received the same peer support service at the end of the study. Before and at the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 8th and 12th week of the treatment, Activity of Daily Living Scale (ADL) and Social Disability Screening Schedule (SDSS) were used to evaluate the activities of daily living and social function of the two groups. ResultsThe ADL scores of the study group were lower than those of the control group at the 8th week and 12th week of the treatment ( t=-2.420, -2.814, P<0.05 or 0.01) . The SDSS scores of the study group were lower than those of the control group at the 8th week an 12th week of the treatment (t=-2.057, -2.322, P<0.05) . ConclusionPeer support services may help improve the ability of daily life and social function of patients with chronic schizophrenia. ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT In the context of debates surrounding the training of mental health peer support workers and their incorporation into the Catalan Health System, this article presents a literature review complemented by interviews carried out between 2020 and 2021 with both international and Spanish experts. Based on the information obtained, content analysis of elements of their training and integration within the health system was performed. German-speaking countries offer the most homogeneous training and recruitment programs. In the case of English- and French-speaking countries, non-profit or third sector organizations are usually in charge of training programs and recruitment. Various experiences with training programs exist in the Ibero-American world, although they are not recognized as professional qualifications. Recommendations are offered for the development of this figure in Catalonia, which include advancing towards professional training with recognition as health care providers, as well as contracting options from both socio-health or health care providers or from third sector entities.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Mental health problems are a relevant issue all around the world. Mental illness affects one in four people throughout their lives, causing serious socio-economic and human rights-related consequences. In Spain, despite the progress made with psychiatric reform and the promotion of a community model, it is necessary to continue working to improve the quality of life of people with mental health problems. Education and peer support are highly recommended strategies to contribute to their social and occupational integration. Peer support is a relationship based on mutual support. It is established between two people: the person with mental health problems trained to provide the support and the person who receives it. This support enhances the recovery process. For this support to be effective, it is essential to previously train the person who will undertake the counselling functions. The relationship of support offers practical advice, suggestions, strategies and emotional and psychological support. In addition, maintaining an non-professional perspective is essential to help people to rebuild their sense of community after an unknown experience. Peer support brings benefits to all parties involved: support providers, receivers and implementing organizations or institutions. However, training programs for peer support are not widespread. In Spain, despite the recognition of the need to integrate people with mental health problems into society and to respond to their needs, there is no published research on guidelines for such training programs. For this reason, this research identifies the peer support training programs which have been or are being carried out in Spain and describe their formal characteristics. A bibliographic review of databases and web pages has been undertaken to identify Spanish experiences of training people with Severe Mental Disorder (SMD) based on peer support and to describe their formal characteristics (duration, methodology, evaluation and workplace). A total of 77 programs found in the electronic databases, 75 of which have been excluded as they are not Spanish experiences. Five programs were found in the searches carried out on the reports of conferences, congresses and websites of Spanish organizations and institutions. Finally, seven training experiences were selected for the group, five of them focused on peer support and others on the figure of the personal assistant. The study of the programs is carried out following the indications of the content analysis model. The training programs described have common objectives, however, they vary considerably in their approach, duration, names of support and evaluation providers and, to a lesser extent, in the contents, methodology and workplaces. Despite the expansion of peer support in mental health, the number of experiences found in Spain is limited. Any program must be adapted to the strengths of the individuals, the type of work, as well as to the needs of the community. Furthermore, if this new professional profile is regulated at work, it will contribute to improving the rates of social and occupational integration of people with mental health problems. It is necessary to continue developing and implementing experiences of these characteristics and to investigate their efficiency and effectiveness in order to be able to provide guidelines on peer support in the Spanish population.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the peer support experience of newly graduated nurses during standardized training period. Methods:Using phenomenological qualitative research methods and purposive sampling, from April to December 2020, 32 new nurses who participated in the standardized training peer support program in the Affiliated Hospital of Yangzhou University were selected. Semi-structured interview was conducted and Claizzi content analysis method was used to analyze the data. Results:Peer support during the standardized training of new graduated nurses could be summarized into four major themes and eleven sub-themes. Theme 1: cognition and attitude (emotional security, adaptive guidance, recognition of the value of peer support, positive intention to support). Theme 2: peer support needs (department-related information needs; knowledge and skills experience needs; emotional communication needs; career growth support needs). Theme 3: peer support experience (adaptive behavior changes, cognitive and emotional changes, differences in perceived expectations of supporters and support effects). Conclusions:During the standardized training, we should attach importance to the important supporting role of peer support for new nurses. By building a peer support platform for new nurses and broadening experience exchange channels, we can enhance the positive experience of peer support, so as to promote the role adaptation and career growth of new nurses.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Complications of diabetes mellitus (DM) are a public health problem globally. DM management entails medication and self-management. Peer support groups (PSGs) can improve self-management and promote healthy behavior. The objectives of this study were to design, establish, and evaluate two PSG models for people who had been screened for diabetic retinopathy to assess self-reported lifestyle changes, satisfaction with meetings and barriers to attendance. Methods: Peer groups were established using a pre-tested facilitator's guide in 11 locations in 3 states. Group members were oriented on diabetes management and lifestyle changes to improve control. Attendees' experiences were ascertained through semi-structured interviews and self-report. Data were analyzed using MS Excel 2017. Results: Eleven PSGs were established in 3 states, in 10 community health centers and one eye hospital. 53 sessions were held and 195 people attended on 740 occasions. Lifestyle changes most frequently reported between first and second visits were taking medication regularly and dietary modification. Attendance declined in the eye hospital group. 83% of CHCs members were satisfied or very satisfied compared with 37% of eye hospital (EH) members. The barriers included distance and lack of family support. Conclusion: PSGs held in CHCs were more sustainable than those in an eye hospital, and group members were more satisfied and more likely to report positive lifestyle changes. Findings were self-reported and hence a major limitation for the study. Further studies should focus on obtaining objective measures of control of diabetes and risk factors for diabetic retinopathy from members attending peer support groups in CHCs.

ABSTRACT

Objective: In Japan, consultations by self-help groups (SHGs) and peers play an important role in supporting cancer survivors. This study aimed to clarify motives of cancer survivors who established and have managed an SHG for over 10 years. Methods: (1) Study participants: We recruited participants from cancer patient associations and support center of cancer core hospitals all over Japan. Among 18 applicants, 12 applicants who had experience with establishing an SHG were chosen as subjects. (2) Study procedure: We conducted semi-structured interviews between December 2015 and August 2016 to ask about motives for establishment and intentions to continue. (3) Analysis: We analyzed the data both qualitatively and inductively with a focus on the significance of continuing the activity of SHG. Results: Reasons for long-term continuation of SHG were: ‘a mission as a long-term survivor/witness’, ‘firm belief in the importance of sharing an experience with a cancer’, ‘significance of participant’s increasing autonomy and involving repaying is becoming a life work’, ‘continuation of the connection with medical staff’, ‘features of consultations by professionals and those by peer supports’, ‘equal relationship with medical staff’, ‘continuation by developing successors’, and ‘suggestions for medical care’. Conclusion: The study showed that a sense of fulfilment, a mission as a lifework, fear of recurrence even after 10 years, and desire to connect with medical staff supported the activity of SHG. For future research it is necessary to accumulate data targeting a longer term survivor more widely.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>BACKGROUND</b>Breast cancer patients experience various side effects during cancer therapy, often resulting in reduced quality of life and poor adherence to treatment. A limited range of proven interventions has been developed to target such side effects. While Tai Chi offers benefits for the health and well-being of breast cancer survivors, the effectiveness of Tai Chi across the treatment continuum has not been evaluated. Improved patient education and support has been suggested as a priority for breast cancer care. This pilot study assesses the feasibility of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to evaluate the effectiveness of "an integrative Tai Chi" (ANITA) program for breast cancer patients undergoing cancer therapy.</p><p><b>METHODS/DESIGN</b>This is a single-centre, two-arm feasibility RCT. Twenty-four patients with breast cancer who have undergone surgical treatment will be recruited from the Dunedin Hospital (New Zealand) over a 12-month period (from August 2017 to July 2018). Subject to informed consent, patients will be randomized to receive standard cancer treatment alone or standard cancer treatment plus the ANITA program, consisting of peer support, health education, and Tai Chi Ruler exercise. The program runs alongside the patient's adjuvant cancer therapy, which may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, antibody treatment, and/or antihormonal therapy. Analysis in this study will focus on process evaluation of participant recruitment, retention, treatment fidelity, acceptability of the program, and occurrence of adverse events. Clinical outcomes (i.e., fatigue, sleep quality, anxiety and depression and quality of life) will be assessed at baseline, and at 12 weeks and 24 weeks post-randomization.</p><p><b>DISCUSSION</b>Outcomes from this study will inform the feasibility and methodology for a future fully-powered RCT.</p><p><b>TRIAL REGISTRATION</b>Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry with the identifier ACTRN12617000975392.</p>

ABSTRACT

Abstract The reflection focus of this article is the formation of a social network through an internet social media, the Intervoice, seeking to understand how social networks integrate in offerings of peer support. By choosing the experiences lived by voice hearers on Intervoice's virtual environments as the main axis of our approach, we seek to identify the existence of a change of perspective in relation to the exclusively descriptive approaches by voice hearers, as well as analyzing if this social media, whilst broadening the possibility of interaction and sharing of experiences, favors the process of peer support for people that hear voices. A methodology was developed from the observation of the Intervoice posts on Facebook from September 2014 to May 2015. After thorough analysis, we concluded that Facebook was the media with most interactions when compared with other media such as Twitter and YouTube. Thus, we selected the most interesting posts and comments and pointed out issues and specific discussions, particularly those that dealt with peer support. The results of this research point to the extreme relevance that the peer support through virtual environments and social networks has been gaining in recent times, mainly by the possibility of real time interaction.

ABSTRACT

Objective To discuss the application effect of peer support education in improving theself-management ability of old patients with diabetes. Methods A total of 160 cases of old patients with type 2 diabetes who were treated and hospitalized from June 2014 to August 2015 were selected, then equally divided into observation group and control group through using random number method. Finally, 76 cases were studiedin observation group, while 75 cases in control group. The health education guidance of conventional diabetes had been used in two groups for six months, and the peer support education was also conducted for the patients in observation group on the basis of conventional education. The self-management ability, insulin standard injection knowledge-belief and attitude-behavior/practice (KAP) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) value of old patients with diabetes were observed before intervention, 3 months and 6 months later, respectively. Also, the hypoglycemia frequency in two groups was compared during intervention. Results After three months of intervention, the score of diet, exercise management, glucose monitoring, foot care, pharmaceutical administration and smoke for self-management ability in observation group was 4.63 ± 0.92, 4.18 ± 0.97, 2.86 ± 0.96, 2.35 ± 0.59, 4.01 ± 1.43 and 0.62 ± 0.29, respectively, while that of these indicators in control group was 3.69 ± 0.83, 3.52 ± 0.67, 1.75 ± 0.67, 1.63 ± 0.72, 3.05 ± 1.39 and 0.59 ± 0.38. Except smoke (P > 0.05), the differences between two groups were statistically significant (t=2.987-5.965, P 0.05). Then, the insulin was normally injected in observation group after six months of intervention, the score of knowledge, attitude and behavior was 5.63 ± 1.87, 43.17 ± 6.03 and 16.57 ± 1.59, while that in control group was 3.76 ± 0.83, 23.71 ± 0.59 and 10.16 ± 0.95. The differences between two groups were statistically significant (t= 8.569, 15.623, 6.751, P<0.01). Also, the level of glycosylated hemoglobin was decreased from (8.17 ± 0.32) % to (7.16 ± 0.41) %, and the difference was statistically significant (t=-3.560, P=0.000). Conclusions Peer support education couldenhance the self-management consciousness of old patients with diabetes, standardize the insulin injection, improve the ability of self-management and improve glucose metabolism index so that it is worthy of being clinically popularized and applied.
